Action Spotlight: Brooklyn to Host Vaudevillian Global Warming Burlesque Afterparty for NYC Area Actions

Posted by Jason on September 27th, 2007

In Brooklyn, creative organizers have decided to combine their dreams of a clean energy future with their passion for the stage. They’re bringing on a new economy, while bringing back burlesque! The event will combine satire, humor, performance art, education, and of course, direct climate action. Check out what they have to say about the event:

“On November 3rd 2007, as communities across the nation gather to host climate change awareness events exactly one year before the next presidential election, the Brooklyn-based burlesque dance trio Suspicious Package invites guests to a gritty bar on the Williamsburg waterfront to revel in the depravity, carnality and shocking awe of the changing climate in our decadent lifetime. The doors will open at 9:00 p.m. to a world in which the full space of the bar is an immersive experience of impending environmental doom. Installations in the venue will be as important as the show itself, weaving together environmentally shocking art - on and offstage.”

This event is a testament to the breadth and depth of November 3rd actions being planned – people with a wide range of interests are throwing every bit of creativity they’ve got into this uniquely historic day. Way to Step It Up Brooklyn! Interested in performing? Check out their event description for more details.

This sounds awesome...when you start making environmental sensibility cool (my broke, carbon neutral ass) and villify resource liquidators (Athletes w/ Hummers, Actors with planes, etc)...you have the means of a true revolution. concerned hipster needs to stay home though.

This anonymous commenter makes me wonder what righteous and pure acts of social progress he is up to. I wonder if he is doing anything himself nearly as bloody productive as feeding people's minds (and groins) with creative juices and cooperative energies.

Buzz is action, my friend, productivity IS proactivity, urgently charged collaboration is the key to problem-solving. Laughter is power, emotion and beauty are essential to survival. Get up then, nay-sayer, take your damn pants off and show the world what you have to offer. Join us or shut up and get your own work done 'fore you go criminalizing the folks who share your perspective. They're the ones whose forces you will need to join if and when the shit really hits the fan.

    In Sassy Solidarity,

    Dear Concerned Hipster,

I am confused as to why you would be opposed to any act that calls attention to pertinent global climate issues. Are you not aware that some of the world's most profound and moving and influential socio-political works were comedies, satires, and raucous Baccinaillia. Think about Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, Woodstock, and Saturday Night Live (no matter how unfunny it may be).

This event promises to be a welcome fusion of art and politics. And we might as well have a couple of drinks and see some beautiful girls show us what it's all about.

    Concerned Hipster-
Young people are overwhelmed by the environment and by politics on a daily basis, leading to apathy, eco-paranoia, and a withdrawal from activism and from caring. It is important to honor a large issue like climate change by making art and making merry so that we can live with it and be with it - instead of want to withdraw and deny it. It is important to laugh and to have fun, just as important as it is to take action.

The interpretation of 'raising awareness' and being 'productive' about global warming is being taken to ridiculous heights. Sure, girls dancing around on stage is depraved, but it doesn't do a damn thing for the environment. In fact, it probably scares more people away from really thinking about what they could do for global warming.

An event like this only targets one audience: those that are already convinced, but too poor or lazy to make a difference. The fact that we, as a 'concerned' society, are tolerating crap like this, testifies to why global warming exists in the first place.
