On Saturday November 3, 2007, 0ver 100 people gathered at the athletic complex of Albion College, Michigan for a Climate Change Awareness Fair as part of the national day for climate change action, Step It Up 2007. Attendees included faculty, students, parents of the students, children, community members, the president of Albion College and Senator Mark Schauer from District 19 of Michigan. 22 booths composed of student and community organizations and professors represented different aspects of climate change. Topics ranged from peak oil production and the scientific basis on climate change to Mountain Top Removal and alternative fuel development. Austin Gee, guitarist and Crimson Blue, band provided entertainment and music throughout the event. An electric car in which the College is looking into purchasing was also featured. Senator Mark Schauer talked on Michigan’s economy and how green jobs could improve the state of Michigan’s budget crisis. He said that alternative energies such as wind and solar, which don’t emit CO2 and would help reach the reduction goal of CO2 80% by 2050, have a lot of potential in the state of Michigan. Geology Professor and Director of the Environmental Institute Dr. Timothy Lincoln talked on Albion College’s direction toward sustainability. Students also had an interactive artistic documentary of local and campus leaders speaking on obstacles pertaining to climate change action and ways to overcome them.
