We had a great event this morning sponsored by the Sierra Club, United Steelworkers (Blue Green Alliance) and the West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC). Legislators coming to speak were Congressman Vernon Ehlers (U.S. House of Representatives-Dist 3), Kent County Commissioners Brandon Dillon (Dist 18), Carol Hennessy (Dist 14) & Arthur Tanis (Dist 6). Mayor George Heartwell was unable to attend in that he was representing the City of Grand Rapids at the U.S. Conference of Mayors-Climate Summit in Seattle, WA.
We also had candidates running in the upcoming Nov 6th Election attending. The event was held at 'The Rapid Central Station" encouraging participants to take the bus there. Various community and environmental groups also had informational booths.
Presentations centered around the National & State Energy Legislation and that in MICHIGAN with Fall upon us...it's time for "turning up the heat" to move Michigan to a NEW ENERGY FUTURE w/legislation for EFFICIENCY of 1% savings per year, harnessing home-grown Michigan RENEWABLES (wind, geothermal & solar) with 20% renewable energy by 2020..because with EFFICIENCY & RENEWABLES this will mean burning less fossil fuels and building NO NEW POWER PLANTS in Michigan.
The MESSAGE TO LEGISLATORS was to support strong Energy legislation and to reject the proposals of five or more Coal-fired plants and one Nuclear plant in the State.
STEP IT UP...Congress,
STEP IT UP... Michigan and Local Legislators.
SHOW us how you're going to lead!!!
